There is no record as to who first realized the sun rose in the east and set in the west, but the realization must have come around the invention of the compass. The compass was first invented by the Chinese in 200 B.C., though theirs pointed South and was used for fortune telling, perhaps the realization came around this time. If not, than it was the European compass that sparked the realization. This was made, independently from the Chinese compass, was invented in 1190 A.D.
This is perhaps a question to which we may never get an answer too.
