Who was the first person to climb Mount Everest?

    Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to climb Mount Everest in May of 1953.  He was also noted for establishing many schools in Nepal the homeland of his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.  He recently died in January of 2008.  The Prime Minister of New Zealand said “the legendary mountaineer, adventurer, and philanthropist is the best-known New Zealander ever to have lived.”
