The first commercial tidal power system in the world was started by a British company called Marine Current Technologies (MCT). MCT first began generating energy from currents by using a 15-kilowatt “watermill” system off the coast of Scotland in 1994. In 2003, MCT started using a 300-kilowatt system off the coast of Lynmouth, England. A Norwegian company, Hammerfest Strom, installed a system in the Kvalsund strait that was about the same size as MCT’s Lynmouth, England system. Hammerfest Strom’s system was also installed in 2003 around the same time as MCT’s.
