The first constructed system for utilizing underground water sources was the development of ‘qanats’ which were a series of wells dug to transport water. These were used in Asia, North Africa and the Middle East as early as 1000 BC. Qanats could be up to 28 mile long and at depths of up to 400 feet. Many are still found in Iran.
