The Myceneans, an old civilization that lived in Mycenae in Greece prior to the invention of the Greek language, were likely the originators of the worship of Poseidon. He was described as a king and an “Earth-shaker,” not being identified as a sea god until later. He remained an important member of the Greek pantheon throughout the golden age, and was the basis for the Roman sea god Neptune.
