Recycling has throughout history been a communal practice. With this in mind, it is difficult to find the single individual who invented recycling and made it commonplace.
However, in 1813 Brit Benjamin Law was the first individual to turn the general practice of recycling into an initiative that created new industrial items from old ones. He invented a process that combined old and new wool into a composite material called “shoddy”.
