Ellen Swallow Richards(1842-1911) was a prominent female industrial chemist in the US in the 1800s, and she pioneered the field of home economics. She was the first woman admitted into MIT & it’s first female professor. She was also the first woman to get a degree in chemistry in America. She was an “ecofeminist.”

She was the first woman accepted to MIT and was an outspoken supporter of the vital role that women played in the economy by nature of their lifestyles and normal household duties. Though not really a feminist by today’s standards, she helped make it acceptable for women to speak their minds and be taken seriously as professionals.
