Ellen Swallow Richards was the leading industrial and environmental chemist in the US in the later nineteenth century and was a pioneer in the field of home economics. She was the first woman accepted to MIT and was an outspoken supporter of the vital role that women played in the economy by nature of their lifestyles and normal household duties. Though not really a feminist by today’s standards, she helped make it acceptable for women to speak their minds and be taken seriously as professionals.
