He is someone you should read. Ed Abbey was a great naturalist, writer, a sardonic man and an anarchist environmentalist. His most famous works were Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang. He’s been called the Thoreau of the American West. In Desert Solitaire, he wrote about his time spent as a park ranger in Arches National Park before it became a tourist attraction, and talked about floating down Glen Canyon, which would eventually be damned, excuse me dammed, to produce electricity.

Edward Abbey was an environmentalist and a novelist, most often choosing to write about the deserts in the West. His two most famous works, Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang, found huge success among the counterculture developing through the 1970’s. He had a somewhat turbulent personal life, but always wrote philosophically about the beautiful and mystical properties of nature, and the negative effect crowds of humans would have on it. Many environmentalists were inspired by his writings and thoughts on nature, even adopting the term “monkeywrenching”; however Abbey always promoted nonviolent approaches for his followers.
