Francisco Alves Mendes Filho Cena, better known as Chico Mendes, was a Brazilian unionist and environmental activist. He fought to end burning and logging of the rainforest, and founded a national union of rubber tappers. He was murdered by ranchers in 1988 angered by his activist work.
Not only was Chico Mendes a Brazilian union leader but he was an environmental activist. He defended to keep tropical rain forests intact by reaching both the Interior Ministry and the citizens. He worked for sustainable harvests to protect the forests, established forest reserves, which made him an enemy to cattle ranchers. In 1988, Mendes was assassinated. Massive protests ensued, and the government was forced to investigate and eventually arrest Darli da Silva, his son Darci Pereia, and their ranch hand, Jerdeir Pereia.
