The first food bank was St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix Arizona. It was started in 1967.
To elucidate, the food bank is a modern concept that was invented by a man named John van Hagel. He volunteered collecting donations for a community dining room and was shocked when he found out that local grocery stores simply disposed of products that were slightly damaged or close to expiring. He persuaded them to donate or “deposit” the unused products to his food “bank”, so agencies could “withdraw” the resources they needed. Cities across the country were inspired and opened their own food banks.
