Who is responsible for protecting endangered species?

The government is responsible for protecting endangered species – plants and animals alike.  Federal agencies are required to ensure that any of their actions (funding, authorizing, or carrying out) will not put these species in harms way, destory or modify their habitat.

There are also many national parks that are protected by the government for these reasons. They house many beautiful and rare landscapes that need protection from human development. Certain species of animals also call these parks home, making their protection vital.
