Niccolo Machiavelli espoused this principle in his best-known work, The Prince. The essentials of machiavellian thought are summed up in the phrase “the ends justify the means.” Machiavelli proposed that a successful leader must be able to act immorally without concern for existing moral codes, because sometimes immoral actions may be the best way to bring about stability and to successfully implement useful public institutions.
