The US Department of Defense owns has been the one to launch and operate satellites for the US. These satellites monitor weather, volcanoes, fires, light pollution, glacier melt, and other earth factors that can early only be observed from space.
Collectively, weather satellites flown by the U.S., Europe, India, China, Russia, and Japan provide nearly continuous observations for a global weather watch.
