The “no-impact man” is a self-proclaimed “guilty liberal” named Colin Beavan. In 2006, Beavan challenged himself and his family to “take a year to develop and live a no impact lifestyle”: meaning, live a life that did not place demands upon the environment. He phrased it as “decreas[ing] the things we do that hurt the earth … and increas[ing] the things we do that help the earth”. By following this no impact style, Beavan kept the following pieces of trash from entering the landfill:

    1248 plastic takeout containers
    2190 paper/plastic cups
    572 plastic bags
    4380 gallons worth of garbage
    2184 disposable diapers

He later published a book, “No Impact Man”, about his efforts.
