Most of the planets were named after Greek and Roman gods and in turn were named by the Greeks and the Romans. Each planet is aptly named after a god or goddess in correlation with certian characteristics about that planet. Mercury was named due to the fact it moved quickly across the sky and Mercury, with his winged shoes flew swiftly down from the heavens as the gods’ messenger. Venus was considered one of the loveliest stars in the sky, so it was named after the goddess of love.
