who named the douglas squirrel

Some sources say that the Douglas Squirrel was named for the Douglas fir tree, from which they procure a large portion of their diet. However, the Douglas fir was named for a Scottish botanist and scientist named David Douglas, so in a roundabout way, the Douglas squirrel was named for David Douglas.
