Perhaps the most well-known environmental activist in the U.S. is Al Gore for his An Inconvenient Truth campaign, which brought global warming and climate change to the forefront of the American consciousness.
One name comes to mind: Tim DeChristopher. He disrupted an auction at which oil companies could purchase land that bordered protected areas and parks by making fake bids and driving up prices. His fake bids made all the other bids at the auction illegitimate, thus the land was won by no one. Since then the Obama administration has said that the auction should not have been run in the first place, and the land is not for sale. DeChristopher is currently awaiting trial for his attempt to defend the environment.
