Who monitors the chemicals used in fracking?

The EPA Office of Water regulates fracking as authorized by the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act. It has also studied the effects of fracking on coalbed methan reservoirs and is currently developing Underground Injection Control (UIC), which would permit guidance for fracking activities that use diesel fuels in fracturing fluids. States can have additional regulations on fracking.

In June 2011, Texas became the first state to pass a law requiring drillers to post the chemicals and the amounts used in the fracking process beginning in July 2012.
