In the United States, a survey was done by SustainLane, which listed Portland, Oregon as the most sustainable U.S. city. This was based on a number of factors, such as amount of water who commute to work, water, and many other factors, which can be found here: http://www.sustainlane.com/us-city-rankings/articles/the-sustainlane-methodology/JXICFDNN7CF9H7MD7P8USMW9Y78J.
A great article by howstuffworks lists Malmo in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark, Portland in Oregon, Vancouver in Canada, and Reykjavic in Iceland as some of the world’s greenest cities. They have undertaken a variety of great environmentally friendly projects. As far as leaders go, San Francisco and the California Bay Area in general has consistently implemented some of the greenest policies and has urged others to do the same. California’s environmental protection agency has frequently been at odds with the federal EPA in trying to pass more stringent environmental regulations.
