Joan Wiles is most known now as a peace advocate who founded the group Grandmothers Against the War in 2005, but she is also a singer and musical writer with shows performed on Broadway. She and other “grannie” demonstrators were arrested in 2003 as they tried to enlist at the Times Square Recruiting Center. She has written a book about her peace group called Grandmothers Against the War: Getting Off Our Fannies and Standing Up For Peace and has now expanded the group to supporting Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers.
Joan Wile is a seemingly ordinary grandmother of 5, except that she has been arrested and jailed in Times Square, NY attempting to enlist in the recruiting center there (this happened in 2005). She is an activist; her and her group Grandmothers Against the War (founded 6 years ago by her) have traveled to Europe and Washington where they rallied and lobbied.
She is also an established musical theatre artist.
