The magnet was not as much invented as it was discovered. There are several different legends of its first discovery. These myths range from the ancient Greeks discovering magnetite near present-day Turkey. There is also the story of s shepherd named Magnes who accidentally found rocks with magnetite as well the myth that it originated from a Macedonian region called Magnesia. Depending on the source you reference either the Vikings, or the ancient Chinese were the first to find a practical use for magnets with the invention of the magnetic compass. The first commercial magnet created and sold was by Gowen Knight in the 1740’s for scientific and navigation purposes.
