Nick Holonyak Jr. is the inventor of the LED, and invented it in 1962. Production costs have become relatively low nowadays and they are rather efficient light sources.
As mentioned above, Nick Holonak takes the credit for LED lights, and was honored for his work in 2004 with an inventor’s award. He teaches at the University of Illinois, and is now is his late 70’s. His inventions and ideas have netted him over 31 patents for his lights, and admitted that he never dreamed LED lighting would hit the heights it has today. Holonak also invented the house dimmer switch while working for General Electric.
