Gregor Mendel is the first scientist accredited with crossbreeding plants, and therefore creating a hybrid plant. He crossed different strains of pea plants and noticed the changes in character traits in the offspring – thus the discovery of genetic inheritance. The first company to take advantage of the increased production power of hybrid crops (specifically corn) was Pioneer Hi-Breds, a company from Des Moines, Iowa, founded in 1926 by farmer Henry A. Wallace.
