Apparently ancient civilizations including Greek, Egyptian, Chinese, and Roman used mica flakes as a light-catching tone on their cave paintings. Glitter may have been used as a makeup in many of these civilizations as well. As far as the modern version of glitter, this was invented in 1934 in New Jersey by Henry Ruschmann who invented machinery that could grind up vast quantities of plastic to make glitter. The company still produces much of the glitter in the world today. The problem with this product is that it contains some harmful substances and is non-biodegradable.
