The first electric car was actually invented in 1832 by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson. This, of course, was long before feul conservation was an issue. Electric cars are in fact the oldest kind of cars, although in the 1920s they were replaced by fuel combustion cars. The first modern feul combustion car designed for fuel efficiency was the 1975 VW rabbit pickup. It got 34 mpg city, 40 mpg highway. The first fuel-electic hybrid was the 2000 Honda Insight.
