Japan has spent the most money on high speed rail on a per mile basis. Japanese high speed rail lines cost an estimated $82-143 million per mile, while in Europe the cost is $37-53 million. The projected cost for high speed rail in the US is $22-132 million. The higher cost of Japanese rail owes to the fact that they have to be built to very demanding earthquake-safe standards.
