I agree that the US has the most to prove after refusing to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. The US has much ground to recover in terms of environmental leadership.
Australia just passed the United States in highest carbon emissions per capita (http://www.chinapost.com.tw/asia/australia/2009/09/11/224278/Australia-overtakes.htm), while the United States and China (http://www.alternet.org/environment/142863/with_copenhagen_summit_approaching,_leading_polluters_us_and_china_undercut_hopes_of_substantial_pollution_cuts/) are the heaviest polluters. It seems as if these countries can’t agree to decrease emissions or commit to a climate change goal, then there might be no hope for a global fight against climate change.
