The Nobel Prize is funded by the Nobel Foundation. The Nobel Foundation is able to fund the giving of the prizes because of the estate left by Dr. Alfred Bernhard Nobel, for whom the foundation is named. Dr. Nobel’s intention was to use his estate to award prizes to individuals who “have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind.” For more information see the website in the citation field below.
In his will, Alfred Nobel left nine million dollars to be invested. The interest is to be given as prizes, and in the event of no prizes, the money is to be reinvested. Donations are now added to the prize money, which has grown from $150,000 to ten million dollars.
