Who first identified the Milky Way in the night sky as our Galaxy?

    Democritus, an ancient Greek philospher, is usually credited with first identifying the Milky Way, at least in recorded history.  He was the first to make the assumption on galaxies, that the Milky Way existed and that it consisted of millions of distance stars.
