In the 5th cent. B.C. Greek philosophers Democritus and Leucippus proposed that matter was made up of tiny, indivisible particles. They called these particles “a-tomos”, or “atoms”. In about 1803, John Dalton developed the first atomic theory of matter–that the atom was a sphere composed of an electrically charged positive substance mixed with an electrically charged negative substance.
