The first name that came to my mind just happens to top The Guardian’s list of the Earthshakers: Top 100 Green Campaigners of All Time list: Rachel Carson.  This Pennsylvanian writer, scientist, and ecologist is referred to by many as the patron saint of the Green Movement, and the Silent Spring is one of the most famous and influential environmental writings to date.  Her work as an environmentalist spanned a long career before this, and her book caused a sort of awakening to occur, instilling the idea that the Earth is an environment we need to live and work with rather than simiply manipulate to our desire.  She inspired as well as outraged many.
