Who discovered our atmosphere?

    Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786), the German-Swedish pharmaceutical chemist.  He is believed to have discovered the atmosphere, along oxygen and other elements.  He was born in Stralsund, Germany, and was best known for not recieving credit for many of his original ideas.

    Torricelli understood the atmosphere quite well much earlier than Scheele, in 1644. The word atmosphere was first used in 1677.
