Wilhelm Olbers (1758-1840) discovered Vesta in 1807. Olbers was a Geman astronomer and a physician. In addition to Vesta, Olbers dicovered two other asteroids and five comets.
He discovered Vesta in 1807 after first discovering the asteroids Ceres in 1801 and Pallas in 1802. He believed the two objects to be remnants of a destroyed planet and that a search near the locations where the orbits of Ceres and Pallas intersected would reveal more fragments, which of course it did with Vesta. Olbers allowed the nathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss to name the asteroid after the Roman virgin goddess of home and heart, Vesta.
