The ancient Greeks believed that the horse was a gift from Poseidon the god of the sea and brother to Zeus king of the gods. It was for this reason that the Greeks built a wooden horse supposedly as a offering to Poseidon to ensure them a safe journey home from Troy, the horse latter come to be known as the Trojan Horse.

According to the ancient Greeks, Poseidon created the first horse in an attempt to prove himself to the lady that he loved, Demeter (goddess of the Earth and harvest). Demeter doubted Poseidon’s true intentions, and so to stall him, asked him to create the most beautiful creature that he possibly could. The first horse was the result of this test.
