Who decides how much money we get for our recyclables?

State governments pass container deposit laws, or “bottle bills”, as an incentive to reduce litter and encourage recycling. Eleven states have bottle bills so far and supporters hope to pass them in other states. In Michigan and Massachusetts, the money from unredeemed deposits is used to environmental programs.

For things like scrap metal, prices can vary depending on current market conditions.
