There have been many contributors to modern climate science. Individuals who can even visually monitor their surroundings participate in research, though on a smaller scale (for example people living in the mountains where glaciers are quickly disappearing and who can remember them being more numerous and larger). One of the most respected climate scientists is James Hansen, head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Hansen published a study in 1981 that predicted rising CO2 emissions would mean accelerated climate change. Hansen has recently criticized world leaders at the G8 summit for making commitments to combat climate change but no direct actions to achieve these goals.
I don’t think that there is a creator of the science of climate change, but there have been many individuals who have contributed to the development of research and information in this field. One of the first scientists to take note of and publish climate change related research was Charles Keeling, and his infamous Keeling Curve. This documented carbon dioxide in the atmosphere above the waters of Hawaii. It was the record of global warming that we have, and has continued to be measured for over 50 years.
