Senator Gaylord Nelson was the founder of Earth Day which began in 1962 and evolved over the next several years. The United States celebrates Earth Day on April 22nd. Nelson wanted to “tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause” so that he could “generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda.”
