    U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin announced the first Earth Day at a 1969 conference in Seattle, Washington. He proposed the grassroots demonstration of environmental awareness to “thrust the environment onto the national agenda.” “It was a gamble,” he recalled, “but it worked.” The first Earth Day took place the following year.
