Who controls how many alligator tags are given out every year?

This depends on the the agency controlling alligator hunting in each state, as alligator hunts are conducted in several Southern states. These states include Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas, and most recently South Carolina. The states may distribute anywhere from 40 to 4,000 tags. It appears that many states award tags through a random lottery system.
