The concept of vertical farming was developed in 1999 by Columbia professor Dickson Despommier and the graduate students in his medical ecology class. The idea came about when Professor Despommier challenged his students to feed 50,000 Manhattan residents with 13 acres of rooftop gardens. It became clear that rooftop gardens wouldn’t produce enough food, and so the idea of a vertical farm was developed.
