I think I’m spelling this right. It’s William Rees. He came up with the idea while in the University of British Columbia.
Carbon footprint is a subset of the term ecological footprint, which was coined by William Rees in 1992. The concept was originally called “appropriated carrying capacity” before Rees became inspired by a computer technician’s idea of his computer’s “small footprint on the desk.” The ecological footprint measures humanity’s demand on nature – how fast resources are consumed and the waste generated from it. The carbon footprint, part of the ecological footprint, is a measure of greenhouse gas emissions.
