While the garden block sounds great, I am concerned about it being surrounded by industry or traffic pollution. Wouldn’t any leafy produce scrub the air of these pollutants and concentrate them for us to eat?

That’s a valid concern, and soil that has been contaminated could cause chemicals to leech into the food and harm people who eat it. Plants could also be exposed to acid rain and possible air pollution from traffic and industry.

What you could do is plant your garden as far away from a busy street as you can. If that is not possible, you could wash your produce in vinegar and water.
