They should be facing wherever they’ll get the most sunlight. In order to maximize the efficiency and usefulness of solar panels, they need to gather sunlight, so figuring out what angles are exposed to the most sun is ideal.
When placing solar panels on your roof, or on the ground and even if they are pole mounted they need to be facing south. When your panels are facing south they get the most sunlight (no matter where you live). Sometimes the south facing roof on a home, is the front roof, so some Homeowner’s Associations won’t allow that (even though they can’t legally say no). So the next best option would be the east facing roof or you could do a ground or pole mount in your back yard facing south. Also, they need to be angled at or around a 30 degree tilt to maximize the use.
