Using a dishwasher uses much less water than washing dishes by hand. Modern dishwashers are designed to wash a load of dishes with as little as six gallons of water. In contrast, just pre-rinsing that same load of dishes can use about 25 gallons of water. It is obvious that many consumers counteract the great water efficiency of dishwashers by unnecessarily pre-rinsing their dishes and by running the dishwasher when it is less than full.
