WWII spawned the atomic bomb and directly led to hundreds of nuclear tests, releasing countless tons of fallout into the atmosphere. The Cold War continued nuclear proliferation efforts and created a race to see who could make the biggest bomb. The USSR won the race to creating the biggest bomb in history, dropping the 50 megaton “Tsar Bomba” in 1961. The Tsar Bomba was over 2,000 times as powerful as the “Little Boy” bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
If it wasn’t for the rise of Nazi Germany in WWII and the sustained Cold War between the US and the USSR it is likely that nuclear weapons wouldn’t have been created so soon. It is also likely that nuclear technology could have been cultivated for peaceful uses instead of weapons.
