There’s an area in the Southern United States referred to as the cotton belt. The cotton belt is comprised of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, and North Carolina. These states are home to the favorable, warm, humid conditions and fertile soil necessary for growing cotton. Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, Arkansas, and also California produce roughly 80% of the cotton grown in the United States each year.
According to the National Cotton Council of America, Texas is the state that produces the most cotton. The state’s three year average from 2006-2008 was 6.2 million bales of cotton. As far as countries go, China is generally the world leader in cotton production.
