California is the nation’s leader in production of horticultural crops. In 2001, California farmers grew and sold about $25.9 billion worth of crops, livestock and livestock products, which is about 13 percent of the national total. About 55 percent or these receipts came from fruits, tree nuts, vegetables and melons, far more than the 11 percent for the rest of the United States. California produces about half the nation’s horticulturalfood production by value.
