Over $50 billion in damage was caused in the United States in 2011 by weather related disasters, a new record from 2008. Using data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a top list of states with the most major declared disasters or emergenices was created, with Tennessee at the top of the list. Tennessee declared 5 disasters and 1 emergency in 2011, mostly related to tornadoes and flooding. Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Mississippi followed respectively. Whila Alabama is not on this list of declared disasters, it contained 240 of the estimated 343 tornadoes that ocurred in the central and southern United States in 2011.
