Potatoes are the leading vegetable crop in the U.S. Mostly consumed as frozen food, i.e. french fries, they’re also used in feeding farm animals, processed as starch, used as tubers for the next year’s crop, or eaten fresh. In 2008, the U.S. export totalled 5.8 billion pounds, valued at $1.2 billion.
According to the most recent statistics (furnished by the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center of America in 2008), the leader in US potato production is Idaho (producing roughly 29.6% of the country’s total potato product). Idaho is followed by Washington, Wisconsin, Colorado, North Dakota, and Iowa.
