Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming has the largest population of wild plains bison (American buffalo), while the largest population of wood bison is in Wood Buffalo National Park, which is in Northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwestern territories of Canada.
There are only about 4,000 wild buffaloes in North America. There used to be about 40 to 60 million buffalo across the United States. Today the 4,000 buffalo in Yellowstone is considered crowded.
